Usually a diode is black in color with a gray stripe marking the cathode side of the diode.

Diodes negative side. A germanium diode needs a cut in voltage at about 03 v. Diodes are small cylindrical shaped components which are consisted of two leads the anode and the cathode. Here are two useful tricks for remembering which side of the symbol is the anode and which is the cathode.

The electricity flows into the cathode negative side of the diode and then out the anode positive side toward the protected circuit. The black common lead on the multimeter indicates the negative cathode lead and the red indicates the positive or anode side. A diode has two terminals.

Current will flow through a diode in one direction only. Diodes are simple semiconductors that allow current to flow only in one direction. The negative side of a diode is called the cathode and the positive side of the diode is called the anode.

This is accomplished by joining one material for the negative side to another different material for the positive side. You can imagine this means that charges flow from the positive end to the negative one. The diode is an electronic component that only permits electricity to flow in one direction while preventing potentially harmful reversals from reaching the sensitive circuit. If the diode is reversed the current is blocked up to a limit.

Usuallythe multimeter will supply enough current into the led which will just barely light it up. Same thing happens on the p side. If the positive side of a voltage source is connected to the positive end of the diode the anode and the negative side is connected to the negative end of the diode the cathode the diode will conduct current.

Negative voltage at p side. If you instead give negative voltage to the p side and positive voltage to the n side the electrons of the n side want to go to the positive voltage source instead of the other side of the diode. Surface mount led set the multimeter to the diodecontinuity setting.

Thus the diode allows current to flow in the direction. The temperature coefficient is approximately constant for temperatures above about 20 kelvin. Think of the anode side of the symbol as an arrow that indicates the direction of conventional current flow from positive to negative.
